- You can usually fetch up to 10-years of
daily data for securities traded on US
exchanges. Other exchanges allow only
1-year of data to be retrieved regardless
of the Start Date you select, and a few
offer only a day or two of daily data. Note: If the web
page showing the historical data has no
download link, then GimmeFreeData cannot
fetch the data. This is the case with all
data sources.
- Selecting data starting dates near
January 1 will often result in no data
received from YAHOO!. The work around is
move the starting date away from January
1st until you get something. Feb 2nd works
reliably. If you ask MSN for more than
5-years of data you will usually get
weekly instead of daily data.
Unfortunately, MSN sometimes delays
updating their data for a day or two.
- How the Date values are formatted when
data is saved is determined by your M$
Windows system settings. Change the Short
Date format via Control Panel's Regional
Settings Dialog if you wish.
- It’s your responsibility to provide
the proper symbol/ticker for each security
desired. YAHOO! requires symbols/tickers
that are different from MSN and Google.
You will have to experiment to determine
which symbol/ticker format gives you the
data you need.
- With YAHOO!, Australian securities have
‘.ax’ on the end of each symbol/ticker
(e.g. AXA.AX). For the Canadian market,
add ‘.to’ on the end of each symbol/ticker
(e.g. WRM.TO). For Pink Sheet stocks, add
'.pk' on the end of the desired
symbol/ticker (e.g. RVWS.PK). Market
Indices don’t require the suffix, but they
do need the ‘^’ prefix (e.g. ^DJI). Visit
Yahoo
Exchange List for the characters
apropos for the market/exchange desired.
- With MSN, Australian securities have
'AU:' before the symbol/ticker (e.g.
AU:AXA). For the Canadian market add 'CA:'
before the symbol/ticker (e.g. CA:WRM).
Some market indices use the '$' or 'US:'
before the usual symbol/Ticker (e.g.
$INX, $DJI or US:COMPX). Visit MSN
Money as a starting point to find
the proper symbols for their server
because they seem to change quite often.
Note also that GimmeFreeData either strips
off or replaces any characters are illegal
under M$ Windows file naming conventions.
- MSN offers currency rates. For example,
use the symbol EURUSD to get the Euro to
US Dollar.
- Google offers stock and ETF data for
download, but indices are currently not
available. Google does have the
advantage of offering their updated EoD
data after markets close sooner than the
other two sources. What's more, downloads
are very fast. The downside is Google data
is not as 'clean'. Often the day before or
after a trading holiday has the
Open=High=Low=Close with Volume=0 even
though trading took place. This is an
important issue to consider when you're
using the DeMark indicators that come with
GRAFster6.
- To fetch security price data for non-US
markets from Google, add to each of your
symbols the code for the market desired.
For securities on the London exchange, add
'LON:' before the ticker/symbol (e.g.
LON:YELL). For securities on the German
Exchange, add 'ETR:' before the
ticker/symbol. For Australian securities,
add 'AUX:' to the symbol/ticker. And so
on. Visit Google
Finance for more info.
